TAMPA, Fla. - A 15-year-old girl playing with a gun was shot in the chest after her mother's boyfriend tried to take the weapon from her, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office report.

Hillsborough authorities responded to the shooting just before 9:00 p.m. at Royal Oaks Apartments, located at 7323 Salano Court.

The victim, Nailin Rodriguez, was in a bedroom playing with the handgun. Police say the boyfriend of Rodriguez's mother came into the room. As he was attempting to take the gun from Rodriguez, the weapon went off, striking the teen in her chest.

She was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital and is now listed in stable condition. It is unknown who owned the weapon.

The mother and her two other children, a 10-year-old-boy and an 11-year-old girl, were in the house when the shooting occured.
