HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY - Hillsborough County Fire Rescue says a driver going the wrong way on US Highway 301 on Tuesday night died in a head-on crash.
The accident occurred around 10:00 p.m. at the intersection of US 301 and Sligh Avenue.
When crews arrived at the accident scene they found two vehicles with severe damage. An eyewitness said one vehicle was traveling north on US 301 in the southbound lanes collided with a vehicle going south.
Fire Rescue crews quickly attempted to extract the wrong-way driver but unfortunately the driver, 56-year-old Cheryl A. Wiethoff, did not survive the accident.
The driver of the other vehicle, 24-year-old Lacey H. Pfirrman, did not need to be extracted and was transported by paramedics to a trauma center in fair condition.
There were no passengers in either of the vehicles.
