People living on a private road in Valrico are not happy with their new trash service.
"I want to see the garbage trucks come down Tuesday and Friday, every Tuesday and Friday. Not occasionally," Don Dunnuck said.
He has lived in a small neighborhood off Village Drive in Valrico for over 50 years.
Until now, "the garbage has been picked up twice a week, no problem," Don said.
Since Republic Sanitation took over trash service in Hillsborough County earlier this month, Don says his trash containers rarely get emptied.
"Nine times out of 10 they just pass it by," Don said.
"You can't let garbage sit that long out here in the hot sun in that can because it just gets really bad," Don's neighbor Tim McCormick said.
Both Don and Tim have called numerous times to complain, but those complaints have fallen on deaf ears.
"We never really get any call back," Tim said.
"Basically they're giving me the runaround. They've always got a different excuse," Don said.
Don and his neighbors say they were told by Republic Sanitation that in order for them to now get their trash picked up they would have to move their trash containers themselves. All the way down the road to State Road 60. "We're just not physically able to do that. It's just too far," Tim said.
We contacted Kim Byer with the Hillsborough County Public Utilities Department. She told us their is a solution. It's called Disability Backdoor Service.
"Basically it's an application that says, take it to your doctor and say they're physically unable to place their cart at the curb," Kim said.
After hearing from us, Kim did contact Don to get the application process started for him.
As for others having the same issues, you can apply for the service by contacting the Public Utilities Department at (813) 272-5680.
