SEFFNER, Fla. - A homeless man was killed after he was struck by a CSX freight train Saturday night.
According to the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office, the train was approaching Kingsway Road and MLK Jr. Boulevard just after 8 p.m. when the train's engineer saw a man laying on the tracks.
He blew his horn several times, but the man didn't respond, investigators said.
The engineer was unable to slow down in time and the train struck the man, identified as 46-year-old Henry Charles Schaffer. Investigators said he didn't have a permanent address but lived in the Seffner area.
Schaffer appears to have passed out on the tracks, and alcoholic beverages were found near him, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The train was traveling at about 53 miles an hour at the time of the accident.
