HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY - A Bloomingdale High School student died Wednesday night after the car he was driving crashed into a tree, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
The victim is identified as 16-year-old Zackary McCarthy of Valrico.
The crash occurred shortly before 9:30 p.m. near Natures Way Boulevard and Golf Meadow Boulevard.
McCarthy was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am when, for an unknown reason, he lost control causing the car to spin out.
The vehicle then struck a tree on the driver's side.
McCarthy was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he died.
A passenger in the car, 15-year-old Michaela Faessler of Valrico, was not hurt, deputies said.
The investigation is ongoing.
