We're learning more about a sheriff's deputy, who investigators say shot and killed a registered sex offender late Wednesday night.
Investigators say it happened when the man broke into the deputy's girlfriend's home on Eden Drive in Inverness.
Deputies say 28 year-old Derrick Vaccianna broke into the home and the woman who lives there and her boyfriend, Citrus County Sheriff's deputy Gregory Entrekin, were inside. We're told Entrekin was off-duty.
Gail Tierney is a Public Information Officer with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office. She said, "They apparently got into a verbal altercation and a tussle of some sorts you know. Pushing and shoving and that type of thing."
That's when investigators say Deputy Entrekin shot Vaccianna once in the chest. Emergency crews took the suspected burglar to Citrus Memorial Health System, where he was pronounced dead.
The Citrus County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Entrekin was hired on August 6 and was enrolled in the Deputy Advanced Recruitment Training Program.
Paul Jensen says he's known Entrekin for a couple years. He lives around the corner from the home, where the shooting took place and heard the gunshots. Jensen said, "He's a nice guy. Something like this wouldn't have happened if he wasn't honestly, really didn't think it really was going to happen. If he wasn't defending himself."
But another neighbor, who didn't want us to reveal his identity, doesn't believe Vaccianna broke in. As far as he knows, Vaccianna lived there. He said, "He's an upstanding guy. He's always been here. I thought he lived here to tell you the truth. He's always here. I've been here for eight months. He's been here every day. He's always cleaning his cars."
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the State Attorney's Office are investigating the incident.
