Deputy-involved shooting in Citrus Co.

CITRUS COUNTY, Fla. - A Citrus County deputy shot and critically injured a man early Thursday after responding to a 911 hang up call.  The deputy was not injured.

Deputy Laura Newton went to a home on West Beamwood Drive in the Beverly Hills area around 6:50 a.m. after a dispatcher received a 911 call, but could not get a verbal response from the caller.

Newton, 33, encountered a 30-year-old man in the driveway who would not respond to verbal commands.

According to witnesses, shots were fired and the unidentified man was hit.

He was taken to Seven Rivers Medical Center in Crystal River.

Deputy Newton has been with the Citrus County Sheriff's Office since 2004.
