CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. - Citrus County deputies hauled convicted child sex predator Harold Monk from his months -long hideout in the woods off Turkey Oak Drive on Wednesday afternoon. Only ABC Action News cameras were there to catch it on video.
Deputies said Monk was released from prison in December after a conviction for raping a 5-year-old boy. He's failed to show up for probation meetings ever since.
"He's living off the land," said Deputy Brian Coleman of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies uncovered two campsites constructed by Monk, about a mile deep into the woods. The sites included camouflaged tents, fishing poles, a fire pit, pillows, blankets, toiletries, a pocket knife and radio. "He's been here for a few months," Coleman said.
A tip about Monk frequenting the nearby Crystal River Mall first directed deputies to scour the woods.
Dave Dix's workplace is adjacent to the wooded area where Monk was found. "I've got three boys. This is a community with a lot of families, so people are concerned," Dix said.
Deputies said Monk will not have the option to bond out of jail and faces charges of violation of probation and failing to register as a sex predator.
