TAMPA - A contingency from the Westboro Baptist Church showed up on Whiting St. in downtown Tampa on Tuesday.
The Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church is primarily known for their anti-homosexual and anti-semitic views, as well as for protesting the funerals of fallen American soldiers.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, the church was granted a permit to speak on a stage near the convention.
Later Tuesday afternoon, a counter-protest group marched to the area, shouting insults and making veiled threats.
The confrontation ended without turning violent.
