TAMPA - On November 2, Hillsborough County residents will vote on what may be the most transformative election issue in decades. If passed, the county-wide transportation referendum would add a penny to the 7% sales tax. 25% of the revenue would pay for road repairs, bike lanes and pedestrian improvements, 32% would go toward expanding the HART bus system, and 43% would create a light rail system originating in downtown Tampa -- branching north to USF and New Tampa and west to Westshore and Tampa International Airport.

Argument for:

The transportation tax is favored by a majority of County Commissioners, Tampa’s Mayor and the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce. The group Moving Hillsborough Forward is spearheading the campaign for the initiative they claim will constitute the largest job creation program in Hillsborough County history. They anticipate billions in private and public investment along the rail line which will stretch over 20 miles in its first phase. Failure to pass the measure they say will leave us at a competitive disadvantage. Chairman, Gary Sasso writes, “Our region is losing out economically to competitor regions such as Charlotte, Dallas, and Phoenix, which have invested in their transportation systems and are now not only combating sprawl but boosting economic development.”

Argument against:

The most vocal opposition to the transportation initiative comes from the Tea Party inspired No Tax for Tracks. The group’s main objection is the cost. They dispute claims that light rail reduces pollution and congestion. They don’t believe light rail generates enough new economic development to justify the cost. No Tax for Tracks also views the referendum as benefiting downtown interests at the expense of the suburbs. No Tax for Tracks member, Sharon Calvert says, “I believe there are other alternatives out there. Transportation problems should be solved with more flexible options, such as expanded bus service. Raising taxes is a mistake. That's Economics 101."

This could be the most consequential issue you'll vote on this year, so let us know what you think. Get the debate started with your comment posted below.
