A look at Mitt Romney's health care plan

Romney said he would act to repeal Obamacare "on my first day if elected president of the United States."

The Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, requires insurers to provide free preventive services such as mammograms, immunizations, and cholesterol checks. Patients will not have to pay a co-pay or meet a deductible.

"It's bad policy today. Obamacare was a bad law yesterday. It is bad law today," Romney said in June when the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare.

When asked if Romney supported free preventive services, Romney campaign press secretary Andrea Saul said no.

"Mitt Romney does not believe it is the government's responsibility to provide people with free stuff," she wrote in an e-mail to CNN.

She said Romney will take a different approach.

"Mitt Romney will institute reforms that control the cost of health care so that preventive care will be affordable for all Americans," she wrote.

These reforms include allowing consumers to purchase insurance across state lines; empowering individuals and small business to form purchasing pools; and encouraging "Consumer Reports" type ratings on insurance plans.
