RIVERVIEW, Fla. - A man allegedly attacking his girlfriend with a metal object is dead after a woman who heard the attack shot and killed him in an apparent act of self-defense as he turned and attacked her.
According to a preliminary investigation, Hillsborough County Sheriff’s spokesperson Larry McKinnon said Daniel S. Robertson, 56, of Brandon, caused significant damage to his girlfriend’s home at the Grand Oaks Apartments, formerly known as the Sherwood Forrest Apartments, as he broke in around 6 a.m. Saturday and began attacking her.
A woman visiting her boyfriend next door to the apartment, Vickie Rock, 50, of Riverview, heard glass and the door breaking as Robertson allegedly forced his way into the home, as well as screaming, McKinnon said.
Rock armed herself with a .45-caliber handgun, went outside and purportedly saw the man beating his girlfriend with the metal object.
When Rock tried to intervene, the man turned and allegedly began attacking her. The woman sustained several facial injuries before opening fire and wounding the man at least once.
Responding deputies found the man deceased in a parking lot. His body has been turned over to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner for an autopsy.
Both woman sustained facial injuries in the altercations, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening. McKinnon said witnesses have corroborated the descriptions of the incident by the women involved.
In accordance with ABC Action News' policy of not identifying domestic violence victims, Robertson's girlfriend will not be identified.
Detectives are conferring with the State Attorney’s Office to determine if any charges will be filed in the shooting death, but Rock has been released from custody with no charges, pending the investigation.
