ATLANTA - All students and teachers are safe and a suspect is in custody after gunfire was heard at an Atlanta-area elementary school today.
The DeKalb County school superintendent says he's had no reports of injuries. He describes the suspect as a man in his mid-20s with no obvious connection to the school.
Television footage showed students running out of Ronald E. McNair Discovery Learning Academy in Decatur, a few miles east of Atlanta, escorted by teachers and police. School buses were being brought in to take children to their parents at a nearby Wal-Mart.
WSB-TV reports a woman in the school office called the station on orders from the gunman, and shots could be heard in the background during the call.
The school has about 870 children enrolled. It is named after astronaut Ronald McNair, who died in the space shuttle Challenger explosion in 1986.
