CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - Child welfare authorities in New Jersey say they had been regularly monitoring and providing counseling to a woman who police say decapitated her 2-year-old son.
A statement from the Department of Children and Families says Chevonne Thomas received "extensive" support from the agency after recently regaining custody of the boy.
Police say they found the body of young Zahree Thomas early Wednesday on the first floor of his mother's Camden home and his head in the freezer.
Authorities say Chevonne Thomas fatally stabbed herself with a kitchen knife after calling 911 to report her son's death.
Child welfare officials say Thomas had undergone court-ordered treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders after losing custody of her son in 2010.
