Emory University: False data was knowingly sent to rankings groups

ATLANTA (AP) - Emory University President Jim Wagner says that for more than a decade the school intentionally misreported data about its students to groups that rank colleges.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/Nt6lws) that Emory launched an investigation in May after the new dean of admissions discovered data discrepancies.

The investigation found the well-regarded school overstated test scores, may have excluded test scores and GPAs from the bottom 10 percent of students and overstated class rankings, among other problems.

Wagner said in a letter to the university that "Emory has not been well served by representatives of the university in this history of misreporting."

Emory is routinely listed as one of the nation's top colleges by U.S. News & World Report. Students and families use the rankings when deciding where to apply and enroll.
