BIG BEAR LAKE, Calif. (AP) - His "warfare" is apparently over.

A law enforcement official tells the AP that a charred body inside the ruins of a mountain cabin that went up in flames is believed to be that of former Los Angeles Police officer Christopher Dorner, suspected in four killings. Other agencies say a body has yet to be found.

Authorities say a man matching Dorner's description fled from a stolen vehicle after a gunbattle and barricaded himself in the cabin in the San Bernardino mountains east of Los Angeles. Two deputies were wounded in a second gunbattle and were airlifted to a hospital where one of them died. The second is expected to survive.

An official said a single gunshot was heard from within the cabin. Authorities say no one ever emerged. Live TV coverage showed billowing smoke and then intense flames. TV helicopters showed the fire burning freely with no apparent effort to extinguish it.

According to the official, a SWAT team surrounded the cabin and used an armored vehicle to break out the cabin windows. Officers then pumped a gas into the cabin and blasted a message over a loudspeaker telling the suspect to surrender. The official said the armored vehicle then tore down each of the cabin's four walls.

The search of the Big Bear area started Thursday when Dorner's burned-out pickup was located.

His online manifesto swore revenge for what he claimed was an unjust firing.
