WXYZ - A Boston-based company has developed new technology that promises to detect the presence of date rape drugs in beverages.
But the company behind the plan says more fundraising is needed before their 'smart cups' can be produced and sold.
According to DrinkSavvy founder Mike Abramson, the cups will change colors when they come in contact with a drug-spiked drink.
DrinkSavvy also plans to develop glassware, stirrers and straws with the same technology.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, GHB, Ketamine and Rohypnol are the three most common date rape drugs. They are odorless, colorless and tasteless, making them difficult to detect.
According to a video posted on the DrinkSavvy website, the company is trying to raise $50,000 to help develop the technology. As of Tuesday morning, they'd raised $20,573.
