TAMPA - Angelo Dundee, the trainer who helped boxing greats Muhammad Ali and Sugar Ray Leonard achieve stardom status died from natural causes Wednesday in Tampa Bay, according to his son Jimmy Dundee.
“Dad went quickly, stood up and collapsed,” Dundee said when reached by phone late Wednesday night.
According to Dundee, his father, Angelo spent the weekend at a birthday party with family. He says his father was his normal jovial self in the days before his death.
Dundee considered Rays Head Coach Joe Maddon a close friend. The two had charity events planned together. “He was so looking forward to going to the Rays charity event Friday night with Joe Maddon,” Dundee said. “They had that Philly connection. ”
Angelo’s son said the family is extremely distraught, but are proud of the legacy their father leaves behind.
“Dad lived a great life, and he did a great job living it. ”
