In recent months, the “twerking” dance style has climbed its way up the pop culture ladder as demonstrated via Miley Cyrus’ 2013 MTV Music Awards performance. ( http://wfts.tv/15u9BlZ )
But for many, the question remains, what exactly is twerking? What makes a twerk, a twerk?
Well ABC News decided to call in the big guns to provide clarification for those of us who weren’t in the know. ( http://wfts.tv/15f0DM1 )
Michelle Olson, a Ph.D. researcher and professor of exercise science at Auburn University, says twerking is a combo of deep squatting, tilting the pelvis and pulsing.
“You take a wide stance with your legs turned out at 10 and 2 so your hips are externally rotated…then you pulse up and down as you thrust the pelvis forward and back,” Olson told ABC News.
In addition to being a trendy dance, she says it’s also a great work out for the butt, thighs, deep muscles of the hips, core muscles of the lower back and abdominals.
But twerkers beware---too much twerking can throw out the lower back or make the knees creak.
