TAMPA - Who gets more laughs? Men or women? A new study aims to prove which is the funnier sex.

To find the anwser, researchers at the University of California asked a group of men and women to write captions for New Yorker cartoons, and then rate which were funny, and which were not so funny.

The study found that men are funnier, just by a hair. And they're mostly funnier to other men.

Among study participants, the not so funny captions were most often attributed to a woman, even if they were man-made. Researchers say this points to a possible stereotype that men are funny.

ABC visited Chicago's Second City comedy club, to ask comedians there who wins the battle of the sexes when it comes to comedy.

"Women are taught to be not so funny on purpose because its seen as unattractive," said Sayjal Joshi, an actress with Second City.

"[Men] may be more crass," said Actor Jim Carlson. "Does that make us funnier?"

The study also found that mens 's confidence outstrips their competence, and they thought they'd be funnier than they were actually found to be.
