CLEARWATER, Fla. - A baby was found at a Clearwater fire station dead Friday morning, City of Clearwater confirms.

Firefighters found the baby girl wrapped up in a towel at the front step of Fire Station 49 on Sky Harbor Drive around 7:20 a.m.

It is unknown how long the baby had been left there or who left the baby. It is not yet clear when the child died.

The fire department is considered a safe place where a baby can be dropped of with no questions asked.

However, the safe harbor law requires the person dropping the baby off to put the child in the hands of another person before leaving the building.

Clearwater Police are conducting a death investigation.
