More than 20 states have started a petition to secede from the United States. Texas is the first state that has collected more than the 25,000 signatures needed for a response from President Barack Obama, according to NBC News reports. ( http:// nbcnews.to/ TwNN1i)
The petitions starting coming in less than a week after the president was re-elected to the White House.
The Texas petition, similar to 22 others submitted on the White House website, asks to “peacefully grant the State of Texas to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own new government.”
A petition must gather 25,000 signatures within 30 days for the administration to respond.
It was posted Friday and surpassed the 25,000 mark by Monday, with 64,817 as of 9:45 Tuesday morning.
Louisiana has also met the requirement with 27,250 signatures.
Other states, including Florida, New York and the Carolinas have posted petitions on the White House website as well.
But these petitions appear to be in vain, as former President Andrew Johnson noted that no state has the right to leave the union, fter signing a proclamation in 1866 that forbids it.
In response to the requests for secession, another petition cropped up on the "we the people" website entitled, Deport Everyone That Signed A Petition To Withdraw Their State From The United States Of America.
That petition has 683 signatures as of Tuesday morning.( http://1.usa.gov/TFYgHy)
