IRELAND - Ireland health authorities are investigating after a woman who was refused an abortion died from pregnancy complications, The Guardian reports.

When 31-year-old Savita Halappnavar learned that she was miscarrying, she asked for a medical termination several times over a three-day period, because she was experiencing severe pain.

She was denied an abortion because a fetal heartbeat was present and she was told “this is a Catholic country,” her husband said.

The fetus was removed once it died, but Halappanavar died as a result of septicaemia on Oct. 28.

Septicaemia occurs when certain bacteria enters the bloodstream. Without medical treatment, it can be fatal.

The death sparked outrage among human rights activists.
