TAMPA - Are you ever curious about the real lives of politicians, celebrities, local newsmakers and athletes? Who are their mentors and who would they really like to meet?
Each Tuesday, ABC Action News asks 10 questions of a Bay area leader or celebrity. They're fun questions that let you get to know the person.
This month many of you enjoyed the annual Strawberry Festival. It's been a tradition in Plant City since 1930!
Last week we featured the Strawberry Festival Queen and her Court. This week we are thrilled that the fair's general manager, Paul Davis is answering our 10 questions!
Prior to taking the post, Davis served in the community with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. On his very last day of the job, Sherrif David Gee told me he promoted Davis from major to colonel. The first time that has ever happened!
Davis took over as general manger just days after leaving the sheriff's office in 2008. He wanted to continue a career in serving people.
He said in that way the two jobs are very similar. The positions both deal with community. It's what he enjoys serving the public.
The Strawberry Festival is a treasured event in Plant City and is considered one of the best festivals in the nation. Organizers said it ranks among the top 40 fairs in North America.
Davis said that even surprised him. He could not believe how well known it was throughout the country and even throughout the world.
Part of the huge success is credited with keeping with the same rituals since the fairs inception. Some of the same vendors have been there now for nearly four decades. Davis and his crew have worked with generations of families.
The festival is a community-oriented event that is governed board of directors from the community. Plenty of volunteers also devote countless hours of their time.
It seems to get bigger every year! Visitors from all over the Sunshine State and the world gather to enjoy all the sights and sounds.
The exhibits include, agriculture, commerce, crafts, horticulture, livestock, and fine arts.
That's not all there are plenty of social events including parades, and big name performers.
Davis said that can be a tough part of the job. So many people want to perform and they can choose just over two dozen.
Davis can only see the festival getting better and better every year and he plans on being a part of it.
Of course, we had to find out if likes cake or biscuit when it comes to his shortcake. He said the cake!
