TAMPA - She is perhaps the most notorious teacher in Hillsborough County: Debra Lafave. The former Greco Middle School teacher pleaded guilty to having sex with one of her 14-year-old students back in 2005.
In a last-minute plea deal, Lafave agreed to a term of three years of house arrest followed by seven years of probation.
But now she wants her probation reduced .
In an exclusive interview with the victim's mother, who we are not identifying because of the nature of crime, the fact Lafave is asking for a reduced term has her livid.
"I am absolutely positively against her getting early probation," she said. "Just because she had twins is a ridiculous excuse. And she's tired of probation? What type of excuse is that? Her actions have forever impacted our family."
The victim's mother also pointed to an agreement made during the plea deal, that there would be no early termination of the deal in place.
"We made an agreement. And she (Lafave) needs to finish her terms," the victim's mother said. "I think by letting her off that would send the wrong message."
In fact, the victim's mother said she would prefer to see Lafave behind bars.
"She has already gotten off too easy," she said. "The only reason we did not go to trial is because I did not want to subject my son... At the time, Court TV was planning on broadcasting the whole trial and would not guarantee protecting his identity. I felt I had no choice. I love my son more than I dislike her (Lafave) and I felt I had to protect him."
Due to circumstances beyond her control, the victim's mother will not be in court Thursday. But, she said Department of Corrections officers visited her home Wednesday to ask her opinion.
"I told them I was stunned she would be asking for such a huge break," she said. "I told them I feel very strongly about this and want to her to fulfill the terms of the original agreement."
The victim's mother was so upset by the news, she couldn't help but compare Lafave to another high-profile case involving a teacher. Stephanie Ragusa, also of Hillsborough County, pleaded guilty to having sex with two students.
She is behind bars serving a 10 year sentence.
"I think that is where she (Lafave) needs to be too. She was given a major break. She should be sitting with Stephanie Ragusa right now and the two of them should be cellmates," she said.
