TAMPA BAY, Fla. - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Thursday, May 19.
(1) Pasco County school cuts announced
Pasco County school principals will notify the district employees that are losing their jobs on Thursday.
Tuesday night county school board members voted to eliminate 513 positions, including 249 teachers, to help cover a $55 million budget shortfall.
The board had avoided layoffs for the past three years by trimming positions through attrition. However, with more than 80 percent of the district operating budget coming from employee salaries and benefits, pink slips were inevitable.
Some of employees slated to their jobs could be rehired if other workers retire or leave their position.

(2) Mayor bikes to work
Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn is promoting National Bike to Work Day by bicycling to work on Thursday.
The bike ride begins at 7:30 a.m. at Majorie Park on Davis Islands and ends fifteen minutes later at the Tampa Police Department headquarters in downtown Tampa.
After the ride the Mayor and Tampa officers will announce the police department's "Share the Road" safety campaign.
