TAMPA BAY, Fla. - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Monday, November 14.
(1) John Yates sentencing
Commercial fisherman John Yates is scheduled to be sentenced in federal court on Monday for illegally possessing undersized red grouper.
In August a jury found the 59-year-old Holmes Beach man guilty of disposing of evidence to prevent seizure and destroying evidence to impede or obstruct a federal investigation. Yates was found not guilty of lying to a federal agent.
Yates faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.
According to the original indictment, deputized officers of NOAA's National Marine Fisheries Service boarded Yates' fishing vessel in federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico on May 5, 2010. The agents reported finding 72 undersized red grouper.
The officers instructed Yates to leave the fish onboard and report back to shore so the fish could be seized. NOAA says Yates instead had his crew throw the fish overboard.
The sentencing is scheduled for federal court in Ft. Myers.
(2) Paris Whitehead-Hamilton murder trial begins
The trial for three men accused of murder in the death of 8-year-old Paris Whitehead-Hamilton begins on Monday.
Stephan Harper, Duong Dai Nguyen and Dondre Davis are facing various charges in Paris' death. A fourth man, Mario Lewis Walls, pled guilty earlier this year and promised to testify against the three others.
Prosecutors say four men went looking for a man they knew only as "Monster" on the early morning of April 5, 2009. The group drove around the Bartlett Park area of St. Petersburg for about 25 minutes before deciding to shoot up the Preston Avenue house Paris shared with her aunt.
Police say Paris was running from her bed when she was struck three times in her back. More than 50 bullets hit the house that morning.
Preston Avenue was renamed Paris Avenue in 2010 in honor of the 8-year-old.
Jury selection begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Pinellas County Courthouse in Clearwater.
