TAMPA BAY, Fla. - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Monday, May 23.
(1) Casey Anthony jurors to Orlando
The jury for the Casey Anthony murder trial will be in Orlando on Monday as they prepare to hear opening arguments which starts on Tuesday.
Last week, a panel of nine women and eight men were sworn in by Judge Belvin Perry. Twelve of the jurors, seven women and five men, will comprise the actual jury, while the rest will be alternates.
Casey Anthony is charged with first degree murder for killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008. She could face the death penalty if convicted.
(2) Nicole Scholl sentencing
A Palm Harbor woman who pled guilty to DUI manslaughter is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.
On March 12, 2010, police say Nicole Scholl was drinking before leaving in her minivan with Anthony Campaign.
While the two were driving on U.S. 19, Campaign hung out the window because he was feeling sick. At that moment Scholl lost control of her vehicle and hit a power pole. Campaign, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected and suffered fatal head injuries.
Scholl was not injured in the crash. She faces up to 12 years in prison during the sentencing hearing which begins at 2:30 p.m.
(3) Click It or Ticket
The Florida Highway Patrol is joining local and national law enforcement officers for the national Click It or Ticket program on Monday.
From May 23 to June 5, officers will be cracking down on motorists who defy Florida's safety belt law and neglect to buckle up.
Florida law requires all drivers and occupants in the front seat of a vehicle to fasten their safety belt. Passengers under the age of 18, regardless of where they sit in a vehicle, also must buckle up.
Motorists cited for failure to buckle up face a non-moving violation that carries a $30 base fine, plus court costs if convicted.
"Many traffic deaths can be prevented if more motorists simply buckle up. That is why the Florida Highway Patrol is strongly supporting enhanced enforcement of safety belt laws during the upcoming Click It or Ticket campaign," said Major Timothy Ashley, of the Florida Highway Patrol. "We will be out in full force to remind drivers and passengers to always fasten their safety belts."
In 2010 safety belt usage in Florida reached record heights as compliance rates climbed 87.4 percent.
