TAMPA - Here are five things you need to know happening in Florida on Friday, August 17.
(1) Brittany Miles Pre-Trial Hearing
A pre-trial hearing for Brittany Miles is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. in Hernando County.
The 21-year-old Miles is charged with murder after deputies say she plowed into 67-year-old Henry McCain's 2009 Suzuki motorcycle with her Dodge Ram truck, killing him.
The crash happened in May of 2011 after Miles was originally pulled over for suspicion of DUI and was handcuffed before breaking free and escaping from the back of a deputy's car.
Miles faces charges in multiple counties related to the chase and crash. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office recently agreed to a $175,000 settlement with the family of Henry McCain to avoid litigation over the incident.
(2) Titans vs. Bucs
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are getting ready to face the Tennessee Titans in week two of the 2012 NFL preseason tonight.
Bucs' rookie safety Mark Barron will take the field against the Titans after missing the team's opener against the Miami Dolphins due to a toe injury. The former University of Alabama All-American player is expected to make his debut tonight, hoping to keep up the positive momentum the Bucs are building at the start of the Greg Schiano era with their win over Miami.
The game is blacked out here in the Bay area. It kicks off at 7:30 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium.
(3) Costco Opening in Sarasota
A new Costco is opening at the Sarasota Square Mall today.
The nation's third-largest retailer (behind Walmart and Kroger) has moved into a building replacing a Dillard's department store. It's stocked with $12 million worth of inventory in anticipation of a big crowd. Historically, Costco openings around the country are well-attended.
Costco memberships cost $55 annually, and the location has excited Sarasota shoppers--who used to have to travel 40 miles or more to shop at the nearest store.
The store officially opened at 8:00 a.m. It's located at:
8201 S. Tamiami Trail
Unit 501
Sarasota, FL 34238

(4) Pink Bra Campaign
A kickoff luncheon for the Hillsborough County chapter of the American Cancer Society is set for today.
It's part of the yearly "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" and "Put on Your Pink Bra" campaign.
The event begins at 11:30 at the Tampa Club on East Kennedy Boulevard.
Last year was the inaugural year for the Put On Your Pink Bra campaign, during which the state of Florida raised more than $6.7 million in the fight against breast cancer. Florida ranks second in the nation for new breast cancer cases and third in the nation for the number of breast cancer-related deaths.
For more information on these programs, you can call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
(5) Back to School Conference
With school starting Monday in Hillsborough County, School Superintendent MaryEllen Elia is hosting the county's annual back to school news conference this morning.
Elia is expected to discuss new programs, technology and other initiatives for the new school year, and talk about some outstanding achievements by students in the past year.
She will also address concerns about safety and logistical issues related to school bus transportation during the RNC.
The conference begins at 9:30 a.m. For more information about Hillsborough County Public Schools, you can visit their website.
