A Tampa man has been arrested a year after his former girlfriend's 2-year-old died from severe brain trauma.
According to Tampa police, Javaurian Saffold was home alone with the child on May 25, 2012 before the child's mother, Candace Mitchell, arrived home to find her son breathing shallowly.
Tampa police arrested Mitchell on May 28, 2012 for aggravated child abuse for failing to seek medical attention for the child in a timely manner - she waited nearly five hours to take the 2-year-old to the hospital after finding him unresponsive.
Saffold originally said the boy had fallen and hit his head on the tile floor, but after the child died at Tampa General Hospital on May 30, 2012, a medical examiner determined the injury was not consistent with a fall.
Detectives traveled to Pensacola earlier this week to arrest Saffold for murder in connection with the May 2012 death. Saffold was already on probation for committing aggravated child abuse on an infant in 2008.
Saffold is being held with no bond in the Escambia County jail. He will be extradited to Hillsborough County soon.
