TAMPA - For the past six weeks, ABC Action News has been bringing you stories of pain and triumph from victims who have survived domestic violence, and we have also shared stories of women who were not as fortunate, in honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Tonight, we are airing our hour-long Taking Action Against Domestic Violence special at 9:00 p.m., with the hope that we inspire and empower viewers with victims’ stories and celebrate the heroes who help to turn victims into survivors every day.

According to statistics, the Tampa Bay area exceeds the state average for the number of reported abuse cases.

One in every four women in the U.S. will face domestic violence in her life, and even young people are affected - one in every 11 teenagers - through dating violence!

But if we want viewers to learn one thing, it’s that the people these statistics represent are more than victims. They are survivors and people are ready and willing to support them.

Since 2008, our station has worked with Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence and a host of other community services to provide assistance to survivors.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from abuse, the heart of the campaign is the statewide domestic violence hotline. Call for help 1-800-500-1119.

With 12 certified domestic violence centers in Tampa Bay, victims can easily get connected with safe shelter and help.
