Tampa, FL -- A 9-year-old Lakeland boy who was seriously hurt when a World War II style grenade blew up in his face is making strides in his recovery.
Tampa General Hospital spokeswoman Ellen Fiss says Edward George Weise III is now listed in serious condition. In February, the boy was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition after the grenade he was playing with exploded.
Deputies with the Polk County Sheriff's Office say the explosion happened at Weise's home in Lakeland. Deputies believe Weise and his father filled the grenade together.
Authorities think the two intended to use the grenade during Fourth of July celebrations in 2009, but the explosive device failed to go off.
