TAMPA - Hillsborough County's Consumer Protection Agency is putting the word out about a Tampa area appliance business they say is ripping off customers.
Sue Fey has dialed the number more times than she can remember.
Fey trusted Courtesy Repair and Refrigeration experts to make repairs to their washer. According to the receipt, Fey gave owner Scott Gilbert $125 and a motor from their machine. Fey said Gilbert never came back.
Hillsborough County Consumer Protection's Eric Olsen says they are working three similar cases involving Scott Gilbert, and the Better Business Bureau reports that the company has had 18 consumer complaints in the last three years.
All four of Gilbert's business numbers have been disconnected, but investigators aren't convinced he's out of business.
Appliance repair people are not required to have a license, so the best you can do to protect yourself is check the Better Business Bureau for complaints and ask for referrals.
Sue Fey has given up hope on getting her money back, but wanted to share her story to warn others.
