TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida's unemployment figures for May are set for release.
State labor officials are hopeful that a downward trend continues Friday when they release the latest numbers.
The state's unemployment rate dropped to 8.7 percent in April even though the state lost jobs that month because thousands of people left the labor force.
The state Department of Economic Opportunity said April's seasonally adjusted rate declined by 0.3 percentage point to its lowest level since January 2009. It still remained higher than the national jobless figure.
Federal officials reported the nation's unemployment rate dropped from 8.2 percent to 8.1 percent in April mainly because more people gave up looking for work.
The biggest job losses were in construction, hospitality and local government.
