Chocolate is an obvious no-no for puppies and pets alike, but what other people foods should you keep away from your dog?

The ASPCA handled over 17,000 poisoned pet cases last year, so it's important for owners to know what to keep out of reach so they avoid the vet bill.

Consumer Reports put together a list of 14 foods that humans normally eat that could poison your dog.

You should keep your dog away from:

  • Alcohol
  • Avocados
  • Chocolate
  • Coffee grounds
  • Grapes and raisins
  • Gum or candy with xylitol
  • Human vitamin supplements
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Mushrooms
  • Onions and garlic (raw, cooked, powder)
  • Salt
  • Tea
  • Tobacco
  • Yeast dough

Different foods cause different reactions in dogs with problems arising in all different parts of your pet's body, from minor digestive problems to organ failure.

If you think your pet has eaten something poisonous, call your veterinarian or the ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center hotline (888-426-4435; a consultation fee may apply).
