Excellent mobile games are nothing new. But every now and then, a game comes along that gets you to put down your console controller and stare at your phone for hours on end. Right now, for me, that game is Contre Jour.
Those familiar with World of Goo will be right at home when they turn on Contre Jour. Though the games are completely different, the soundtrack, look and gameplay all harken back to 2D Boy's masterpiece.
The goal of Contre Jour is to collect all of the lights on the screen as fast as possible before making it to a final, larger light. This may require you to reshape the land, hang from bungee cords or use slingshots. The developers at Chillingo obviously spent a great deal of time ensuring that everything operates as it should, because the controls operate flawlessly.
The first thing you'll notice when you start playing this game is how beautiful it is. The backgrounds are meticulously designed and the stark contrast really pops on the retina display.
Frankly, the game is so well designed that it almost feels like you're playing a piece of art. I found myself wishing I could make it to the next level just so I could see what the art director had come up with next.
The music really completes the experience in Contre Jour. When listened to via headphones (as recommended), the soundtrack transports you into a world where you're completely focused on the game.
All of these elements make this game unbelievably addictive. I played the first 35 stages before I even started to take notes for this review. Every time I turn it on again, I play far more than I had planned to.
My biggest gripe about the game? It isn't long enough. Fortunately, it looks like new levels are already in development.
Overall, Contre Jour was well worth the ninety-nine cents I paid for it.
