MANTEO, N.C. - Andy Griffith, star of "The Andy Griffith Show," died at his home in North Carolina Tuesday.

He was 86.
 
Dare County Sheriff Doug Doughtie said in a statement that Griffith died Tuesday around 7:00 a.m.
 
Griffith had a storied career in show business, starring in the television comedy "The Andy Griffith Show" in the 60's and legal drama "Matlock" from 1986-1995.
 
Before taking on television, he won wide praise in the 1950s in the Broadway comedy "No Time for Sergeants" and the dramatic film, "A Face in the Crowd."
 
The actor received the Medal of Freedom from U.S. President George W. Bush in 2005.
