Journalists from across the state gathered to recognize the best, quality news coverage in Florida. They, once again, gave the top honor to ABC Action News. It was one of TEN awards given to WFTS, the most of any Tampa Bay TV station, on Saturday night, April 27, 2013 at the annual Florida Associated Press Awards Banquet in Orlando, FL.
Since 2009, the most coveted Associated Press Broadcast Award for “Best Overall News Organization” went to ABC Action News. This year, 2013, marks five years in a row! Journalists compare entries of each TV station’s news coverage over the recent year to decide this award.
Staying true to our commitment of “Taking Action for You” and providing quality journalism with news important to the whole Bay Area, ABC Action News took away top honors in the most sought after categories.
When keeping the public safe was top priority, Tropical Storm Debby coverage earned the ABC Action news Team “Best Breaking News” coverage. And when the biggest event of the year came to the Tampa Bay area, other journalists rated ABC Action News as the “Best Election Coverage” for in-depth reporting before, during and after the Republican National Convention. “Best Weathercast” award went to the team certified most accurate in the state of Florida as ABC Action Weather won for forecasting Tropical Storm Debby.
A fourth year winner was the ABC Action News Special Campaign, “Taking Action Against Domestic Violence” for “Best Series Reporting,” which was again rewarded with a first place finish. A top honor also went toward “Best General Assignment” for reporter Jacqueline Ingles and team for exposing a potential dangerous situation where a special needs teacher appears to be sleeping on the job. “Best Feature” first place finish was awarded to reporter Alison Morrow and team for an emotional, turned inspiring story of “Abbey” the seeing-eye dog. Her life-threatening accident and viewers’ outpouring of support gave one man’s story a truly happy ending.
“There are many outstanding news organizations across Florida. To be chosen as the best, five years in a row, is a great honor,” WFTS General Manager Rich Pegram said. “I am proud of all the dedicated staff at ABC Action News whose hard work and commitment make this possible.”
“I’m proud of the type of quality news we provide every day and honored to receive such high recognition from other journalists,” said News Director Bill McFarland. “Each of these awards represents a team effort here at ABC Action News.”
