TAMPA - WFTS has named Bill McFarland news director for the Tampa Bay area multimedia news provider. McFarland joins the ABC Action News team from WABC-TV, the ABC owned television station in New York City where he is the assistant news director.
McFarland has held key leadership positions in newsrooms around the country, including New York City, Washington D.C., Hartford, and Philadelphia. He has also lectured at top American universities on topics such as multimedia news gathering, storytelling for journalists, ethics and news operations.
“Bill brings over 20-years of successful news management experience in large market television newsrooms,” said General Manager Rich Pegram. “I am confident that his commitment to quality journalism and his leadership abilities will help ABC Action News continue our remarkable ratings momentum of the past year.”
ABC Action News was recently singled out by other journalists and named Florida’s “Best Overall News Organization” by the Associated Press for the fourth year in a row. The news station also received the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for “Best Newscast” in the Southeast United States.
“I am looking forward to joining the news team at one of the best stations in America and a company committed to quality, local journalism,” said McFarland.
