TALLAHASSE, FL -- Two of Florida's top leaders are meeting today to discuss plans for a national catastrophic recovery fund. The fund would protect Florida from the effects of a catastrophic hurricane season.

Senator Bill Nelson and Chief Financial Officer Alex Sink will meet in Tallahassee. Nelson is renewing a push in Congress to pass legislation that would provide emergency federal aid to cover property losses in the event of major catastrophe in the Sunshine State.

A national catastrophe fund might also settle Florida's troubled homeowners insurance market. Major insurers are dropping Florida customers because of the threat posed by hurricanes.

Tornado Safety Information

According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricanes can also produce tornadoes that add to the storm's destructive power. Tornadoes are most likely to occur in the right-front quadrant of the hurricane. However, they are also often found elsewhere embedded in the rainbands, well away from the center of the hurricane.
