TALLAHASSEE, FL -- President Barack Obama has called on Florida's emergency management director Craig Fugate to take over the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Florida loses an experienced emergency manager who helped lead Florida through four hurricanes in 2004 and two hurricanes in 2005, including Hurricane Katrina, which hit Florida before slamming Louisiana.

Senator Bill Nelson said today in a prepared statement, "Under his (Fugate's) leadership, lives were saved.  Recovery efforts were speedy and successful.  I’m proud of his public service and believe our nation will benefit from his skills, talent and commitment.”

If Florida gets hit with another hurricane, the state is guaranteed to have an ally at FEMA who is intimately aware of Florida's needs.

Fugate was Florida's emergency management director for eight years.

Tornado Safety Information

According to the National Hurricane Center, hurricanes can also produce tornadoes that add to the storm's destructive power. Tornadoes are most likely to occur in the right-front quadrant of the hurricane. However, they are also often found elsewhere embedded in the rainbands, well away from the center of the hurricane.
