Starting in May, tornado chasing goes to the next level.

Vortex 2 will be the largest attempt in history to study tornadoes, and will involve dozens of scientists, storm chasing vehicles and even 10 mobile radars.  The project runs from May 10 to June 13th and will focus on "tornado alley".

Tornado Alley, an area in the Central US, gets more tornadoes than any other area in the world.

Scientists hope the new data gathered will help them make more accurate forecasts about where and when a tornado will form.

Researchers from four countries and 19 universities hope to chase these massive storms through South Dakota, western Iowa, eastern Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, the Texas panhandle and western Oklahoma.

The peak of Tornado season is late May.
