TAMPA, FL –Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL) has announced that homeowners dealing with damages ,associated with Chinese drywall, may qualify for special tax deductions through the Internal Revenue Service. These homeowners may be able to claim a casualty loss.

Tainted Chinese drywall has been identified in hundreds of homes in Florida along with 20 other states. Homeowners say the drywall is eating away at their home from the inside out. The drywall has been corroding copper wiring, affecting air conditioning units and other household appliances. Additionally, homeownes complain the drywall may be making them sick.

According to a news release from Nelson’s press office, “the amount of such a deduction is the difference between the value of the house before and after the sudden, unexpected or unusual event causing the damage.  In other words, qualifying taxpayers may be eligible to claim tens of thousands of dollars on their tax returns for the damage Chinese drywall has caused them.”

“This is coming as some relief to these families,” Nelson said.  “Considering the terrible circumstances they have had to endure, it’s only right that they are given special consideration.”
