Lab confirms tainted Heparin triggered allergic reactions

Last Update: 12/03/2008 12:31 pm

BOSTON, MA -- A team of researchers led by MIT has confirmed that a contaminant in Chinese Heparin triggered low blood pressure and severe allergic reactions in patients, causing dozens of them to die.

In April, an international team identified the chemical structure of the contaminant, called Oversulfated Chondroitin Sulfate, and demonstrated how it might trigger severe allergic reactions.

This new study simply documents 152 bad reactions to the Heparin and links the majority of them with batches of the tainted Heparin, further proving that it was the tainted Heparin that caused the bad allergic reactions. This report was published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
