Going under the knife to get a job

Last Update: 6/29 7:26 am
TAMPA, FL -- 49-year-old Susan Hellyer is looking for a job. Along with the traditional steps, like building a resume and looking for job openings, Susan is also getting some plastic surgery done.

"I'm having the jowl lines picked up so that it will take away 10 years off my life and I'm going to have the eyes done, because I'm always puffy underneath my eyes."

Plastic Surgeon, Richard Castellano says Susan is part of a growing trend, women hoping a more youthful look will give them a better chance of landing employment in this highly competitive job market.

"Well, I think it’s well recognized that we're a visual society. Ask around and you will hear people say, yea I feel like I was discriminated against because of my age. So, it's something that people are paying attention to, it's not an absolute answer but it’s something that we do and we do it well and it’s definitely a lot more popular. "

Dr. Castellano says people are getting less invasive procedures like Botox and face fillers, which can cost hundreds of dollars, to mini facelifts like the one Susan is getting, which cost 5 to $7,000.

"I'm hoping that I'm going to look the 10 years younger and look like I did when I was 35 instead of 49 and I'm hoping that it will help my self esteem and make me feel better about myself."

Dr. Castellano adds it’s not unusual that people would spend money on their appearance when the economy is making their finances unusually tight.

"You know, it's an interesting analogy that Estee Lauder built the lip stick business during the depression, because people wanted to feel good about themselves and they will, you know, do what it takes to maintain their spirits."

Men are also getting their eyes done as well as lifting procedures and laser treatments all in the name of looking younger and being more competitive, but the doctor warns, whoever you chose to do your procedure, make sure they are board certified and get referrals from patients the doctor has treated before.
