Dirty Dining: S & D Country Kitchen

SEFFNER, FL -- You can get home cookin' for breakfast and lunch at S & D Country Kitchen on West Martin Luther King Blvd. in Seffner.

But inspectors found something else cookin' in the kitchen.

On February 12, the state shut the place down for a day because of a roach infestation after finding live and dead roaches on the cookline, in the storage area, dish area, hand sink, and prep area.

And just 6 months before that, the state had temporarily closed the doors for the same reason.

And in October of 2007, roaches caused inspectors to shut the place down.

"You had a roach infestation in 2007, 2008, and 2009. You've been shut down three times?" ABC Action News Anchor Wendy Ryan asked.

"Yes ma'am," the restaurant manager, Kim, responded.

Kim says they weren't sure what caused the roach problem, but it has been resolved.

"Why is it taking so many times for the inspectors to come back out here and warn you?" asked Ryan.

"I really don't know. I don't know if it's cause of the heat, I don't know if its because the building is so old and we've gone through three different exterminators to figure out the problem but it's under control now," Kim added.

Over the last year state inspectors found 112 violations and 46 critical issues including slime in the ice machine, ceilings in disrepair, and holes in the wall.

And as we looked around, we did notice other issues that inspectors might write up as violations including weeds growing out of control in the back and various pieces of old kitchen equipment stored outside. Both can attract bugs and even rats.

And there were other violations inspectors documented.

"As far as food stored on the floor, temperature issues, cross contamination, food not date marked?" Ryan asked.

"Can you get in touch with the owner on this? I don't really know what to say," Kim responded.
