BREVARD COUNTY, FL -- After spending a couple of years behind bars, Sylvester Jiles recently had the great fortune of having his second degree murder charge bumped down to manslaughter.
It seems prosecutors felt the evidence against Jiles was a bit flimsy, and offered him a plea deal.
He apparently thought it was a terrific deal and snapped it up. A judge sentenced him to eight years probation.
Shortly after his release, Jiles went through a major attitude adjustment that left him thinking twice about life on the outside.
He went back to the jail asking to be let back in saying he was getting death threats, presumably from friends or family members of the person he killed.
Deputies said they'd think about it and told him to leave.
That apparently wasn't good enough for Jiles, who was seen acting "strange" and "erratic" in the jail parking lot.
Before deputies could react, Jiles made a run at the jail's perimeter fence and made it through the barbed wire. He kept going and climbed the next fence before diving through three levels of razor wire.
Deputies said he was really banged up and lost a lot of blood for his efforts. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
There's no word on whether his protective custody wish will be fulfilled.
If he really wants to get back into jail, experts say, all he has to do is violate the terms of his probation. But it could mean an extended stay of up to 15 years.
