HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Ned Lamont, the Greenwich businessman who defeated Joseph Lieberman in a Democratic primary in the 2006 U.S. Senate race, has formed an exploratory committee for statewide office.
Lamont is expected to consider a run for governor.
Without mentioning Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell by name, Lamont said in a statement Wednesday that the state's chief executive "is simply not getting the job done." He points to the state's job losses and the "never-ending budget crisis."
Lamont gained national attention when he defeated Lieberman in the Democratic primary. Lieberman later ran as an independent candidate and defeated Lamont in the general election.
Lamont was supported by many disgruntled Democrats who were upset with Lieberman's support of the war in Iraq.
