TAMPA BAY, FL -- Designers and manufacturers of electronic products are constantly playing a form of high-tech one-upsmanship.

Their efforts can produce items that are amazingly innovative and useful, to other offerings that are downright silly.

Many new products are rolled out at the yearly Consumer Electronics Show in January.  Other inventions that have been around for a while are constantly improved upon.

In addition, many websites exist for the sole purpose of satisfying the hunger of innumerable gadget freaks around the world.

With that in mind, we dipped into the ocean of electronic items and pulled out five that you might like to own.

Several are currently on the market, the others will be available soon.

THE POWERMAT

Chances are, you have an area in your home that’s a tangle of wires, charging devices, power supplies and so forth.

Wouldn’t it be great to do away with all that stuff?

The folks at Powermat say they have the answer.  Their product uses magnetic induction to wirelessly charge multiple electronic gadgets at the same time.

The thin, lightweight Powermat plugs into a single outlet.

The mat looks like an oversized mouse pad.  ‘Receivers’ are laid on top of the mat to charge the devices.  Some receivers are sleeves that fit over the devices.  Others plug into the gadgets and rest on the mat for charging.

According to the company’s website, the Powermat will be available this fall.  Other companies already have competing products.  But the Powermat people say their product will support far more gadgets.

The mats will go for around $100.  The receivers will cost around $30 a pop.
