Polk teen dies after being hit by car

LAKELAND, FL -- A 14-year-old student died after he was hit by a car Tuesday while he was walking near Old Dixie Hwy and Taylor Rd South in Lakeland.

The victim, identified as Colton Meyers, was a student at Tenoroc High School.

He was taken by medical helicopter to Tampa General Hospital in critical condition and was later pronounced dead.

According to investigators, the driver of a Nissan involved in was traveling south on Old Dixie Highway.

The driver attempted to pass another vehicle in front of him and his car struck Meyers, who was crossing Old Dixie.
